DIY - Toothpaste

The average person brushes their teeth about 68,000 times throughout their life. However, store-bought toothpaste has a lot of chemicals and may not even work that well. Making your very own simple, economical, and natural DIY toothpaste is the best option!

For this DIY toothpaste, you will need:

  • 2/3 cup of baking soda

  • 1 teaspoon of fine sea salt

  • 1 to 2 teaspoons of essential oil or peppermint extract

  • Filtered water

2.   Mix the Soda and SalT

Mix the baking soda and sea salt thoroughly. After mixing, you should inspect the mixture closely and make sure that there are no clumps of salt in the baking soda. The salt should be mixed in so well that it can’t be distinguished from the soda.

You can use a whisk or a fork to break apart any clumps of salt if there are any in the mixture. If you leave them in, the clumps can be harmful to your teeth and may even leave an unpleasant taste behind.

3.   Add Few Drops of Essential Oil

A few drops of any essential oil of your choosing should be added to the mixture. A lot of people go for the spearmint and peppermint options, but you can try any other flavor as well. Lavender is a common option, known for having a calming effect. Orange oils can reduce anxiety, while eucalyptus has antibacterial properties.

Mix the oil in water, a few drops at a time. Stir it well after each addition. You can keep it as thick or as thin as you want. It is important to remember that the toothpaste will dilute faster when exposed to saliva if it is too thin. This can make it difficult to brush your teeth.

Once this is done, you can mix the water and oil with the soda and salt. Stir the mixture until you get the right consistency.

4.   Store the Toothpaste in a Glass Jar

For ideal storage, keep the DIY toothpaste in a glass jar. Essential oils need to be kept in a jar so that they don't evaporate. Keep the jar out of sunlight in a cool, dry place.

You can now scoop a bit of the mixture onto your brush and brush away!
